Other public spaces look better on a postcard, or in a Chamber of Commerce video. But none has had a greater cultural impact on a more diverse segment of the Bay Area. Is there a Bay Area property that hosted more starstruck preteens seeing their idols for the first time, from the Beatles to Menudo to Madonna?
Over three decades, the annual indoor event became a major attraction in the San Francisco Bay and was attended by nearly half a million people since its inception with steadily increasing growth in attendance each year untilwhen the event was cancelled due to poor ticket sales and cost overruns. Because of the broad spectrum of conventional and unconventional entertainment offered on multiple stages at the Exotic Erotic Ball, it may be described as a combination of Adult-themed; Halloween festival, Music FestivalBurlesque show, Lingerie partyMasquerade ballFetish clubSwingers party and Adult Industry Trade Show. The expo was a two-day Adult-Expo typically held the day before and the day of the Exotic Erotic Ball.
The Exotic Erotic Ball may be known for having "nothing to hide," but its producers get a little cagey when the talk turns to their event's history. For the past three years, the venerable affair has moved from venue to venue, leaving behind a trail of broken relationships. There was the transit fiasco ofwhen patrons were stuck waiting in huge lines for shuttle service to the ball's short-lived Treasure Island venue.
Chances are, you've attended something at the Cow Palace; perhaps the rodeo, the Flower and Garden Extravaganza, the gun show, or the Exotic Erotic Ball. But, that 67 year tradition is colliding with the needs of residents who live in the shadow of the arena -- a low income Daly City neighborhood called the Bayshore. For years, Daly City tried to negotiate with Cow Palace to lease 13 acres of land in the parking lot for commercial development, but the two sides could not come to terms.
The Exotic Erotic Ball, a self-proclaimed "celebration of flesh, fetish and freedom" that was first held in San Francisco 31 years ago and has long been associated with the city - even after its move to the Cow Palace - is heading across the bay to Richmond. The move means that instead of having 20, people in lace, latex and body paint, organizers will be able to cram just 14, attendees into the Craneway Pavilion on the Richmond waterfront over two days. Of course, size isn't what matters, said Howard Mauskopfthe event's executive producer.
The Exotic Erotic Ball has also re-affirmed its commitment to independent music by offering two prime-time, full-paying gigs exclusively to Indie artists. All entries are juried, and two winners chosen to play before thousands of masked, costumed, and otherwise elaborately attired fans. And for those looking for a sexy and memorable vacation in a great city at a great price, where fun is absolutely guaranteed — you cannot do better than The 30th Annual Exotic Erotic Ball!
